Physical modeling synthesis refers to methods in which the waveform of the sound to be generated is computed by using a mathematical model, being a set of equations and algorithms to simulate a physical source of sound. The Continuum Fingerboard's string instruments use a feedback filter and a convolution body to simulate the action of a string and the resonant and tone of an acoustical body.
The Pluck String sound has a multi pluck effect associated with finger position in the Y direction. It also uses Y to replicate different muting levels within the string regenerative decay cycle. Dynamics via Z depth can be used to create anything from sharp percussive attacks to singing sustained tones.
Like the other physical modeled instruments in the Continuum Fingerboard, the string instruments in the Continuum Fingerboard are not designed to emulate a particular instrument per se, but are created to be an evocative unique musical experience in their own right.
