In its simplest form, Frequency Modulation modifies the timbre of a sine waveform by frequency modulating it with a second sine waveform. The Continuum Fingerboard's FM implementation uses this deceptively simple synthesis technique in order to create a variety of musical sounds, from haunting and ethereal to brash and raucous.
The beauty of this sound in the Continuum Fingerboard is reminiscent of the beauty of older electronic musical instruments like the Theremin or the Ondes Martenot. These older electronic instruments used simple classic analog synthesis designs as their sound generation source. While FM is a different synthesis technique than those, the result is still a tone which can invoke feelings of mystery and other-worldliness.
The example below was performed using the Continuum Fingerboard's FM1 sound exclusively.
